Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: recommend and justify an extension strategy to use in a given situation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Analyse a product mix and identify opportunities for extension.
  • Evaluate different product extension strategies against brand strength, market demand and resource constraints.
  • Recommend and justify the most appropriate extension strategy for a given business scenario, linking it to objectives such as market‑share growth.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handout (FreshFizz scenario)
  • Worksheet with decision‑making framework
  • Calculator or spreadsheet for revenue projection
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: which brands have launched new products under the same name? Review the concept of product extension and outline today’s success criteria – students will analyse a case, select a suitable strategy, and produce a concise justification.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list examples of product extensions they’ve seen and share briefly. (Engage)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define product mix, line/brand extension, and other strategies; illustrate with the table from notes. (Explain)
  3. Framework walk‑through (10’) – Teacher models the six‑step decision process using the FreshFizz case on the board. (Model)
  4. Group activity (15’) – In pairs, students complete the worksheet: analyse the current mix, identify market opportunity, assess brand equity, choose a strategy, and draft justification. (Apply)
  5. Peer feedback (5’) – Groups exchange worksheets and use a checklist to critique each other’s recommendations. (Check)
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5’) – Highlight key reasoning and address misconceptions. (Summarise)
Conclusion:
Summarise how the chosen extension aligns with brand strength and market demand. Students complete an exit ticket stating the strategy they would recommend and one supporting reason. For homework, they research a real‑world product extension and prepare a brief justification.
