Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: French
Lesson Topic: The built environment (e.g. buildings and services, urban areas, shopping)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe various types of buildings, services and shops in French using appropriate vocabulary.
  • Use adjectives and functional expressions to compare and characterise urban areas.
  • Give and ask for directions verbally and in writing, employing correct prepositions and verbs.
  • Write a coherent 80‑100 word description of a town or neighbourhood, including location, facilities and personal opinion.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for slides
  • Printed vocabulary handouts (buildings, services, shops)
  • Audio recording of the sample dialogue
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheet with writing task and checklist
  • Printed map of a town centre showing key locations
Introduction:

Show a photo of a bustling French town centre and ask students what places they can identify. Prompt them to recall any French words they already know for buildings or shops. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to name at least twelve places, describe a neighbourhood and give directions accurately.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students match French terms to pictures of buildings/services displayed on the board.
  2. Vocabulary input (10') – Teacher presents key vocabulary and adjectives; students record them in notebooks.
  3. Listening & speaking (15') – Play the sample dialogue; students identify directions, then role‑play asking for a pharmacy and a supermarket.
  4. Reading & comprehension (10') – Short paragraph about a neighbourhood; students underline place‑names and adjectives, then summarise in one French sentence.
  5. Writing task (15') – Students compose an 80‑100 word description of a city or neighbourhood using the provided checklist.
  6. Peer review & feedback (5') – Exchange papers, check for required vocabulary and correct article‑noun agreement.
Conclusion:

Recap that students have practiced describing the built environment and giving directions in French. For the exit ticket, each student writes one sentence describing their favourite place in the town using a newly learned adjective. Homework: complete a second 80‑100 word description of a different neighbourhood to bring to the next lesson.
