Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: advantages and disadvantages of businesses becoming more sustainable
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main methods of sustainable production used by businesses.
  • Explain at least three advantages and three disadvantages of adopting sustainable practices.
  • Analyse how sustainability decisions impact cost, brand image and risk.
  • Evaluate a case scenario to recommend appropriate sustainable strategies.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts containing the summary table of methods, advantages and disadvantages
  • PowerPoint slides
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Laptop for teacher
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “How many of you own a product that claims to be ‘eco‑friendly’?” Connect this to prior learning about production methods and cost structures. State the success criteria: by the end of the lesson students will be able to list sustainable production methods and weigh their pros and cons.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’): Students write three sustainable practices they have observed in real‑world businesses and share briefly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’): Teacher presents key sustainable production methods using slides and the summary table.
  3. Group analysis (15’): Each group receives one method, identifies two advantages and two disadvantages, and records them on sticky notes.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10’): Groups present findings; teacher facilitates comparison and links to business outcomes.
  5. Quick quiz/exit ticket (5’): Kahoot or short written task with two scenario questions to check understanding.
Conclusion:

Recap that sustainable production can bring cost savings, brand benefits and risk mitigation, but often requires high upfront investment and careful management. For the exit ticket, ask students to write one advantage and one disadvantage of the method they found most compelling. Homework: research a local business’s sustainability initiative and prepare a short paragraph evaluating its impact.
