Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Barriers to travel: economic, political, social, environmental
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the economic, political, social and environmental barriers that affect international travel.
  • Analyse how each barrier influences tourists’ decision‑making.
  • Evaluate strategies used by tourism businesses and governments to mitigate these barriers.
  • Compare recent real‑world examples of each barrier type.
  • Reflect on the ethical implications of promoting travel to environmentally sensitive areas.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Laptop with slide deck
  • Printed handouts of the barrier summary table
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
  • Recent news article printouts (one per barrier type)
Introduction:

Begin with a headline about recent travel bans due to a political crisis to hook interest. Ask students what factors have stopped them or friends from travelling abroad, linking to prior knowledge of tourism basics. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify, analyse and suggest solutions for the four main barriers to travel.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write on sticky notes one personal experience of a travel barrier and post on the board.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (10'): Overview of economic, political, social and environmental barriers, using the summary table.
  3. Group analysis (15'): Each group receives a news article, identifies the barrier type, discusses its impact and possible mitigation strategies.
  4. Whole‑class debate (10'): “Budget airlines vs. environmental sustainability” – groups argue pros and cons.
  5. Collaborative table update (5'): Groups add key points from their discussion to a master barrier table on the whiteboard.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Individually write one actionable idea for tourism providers to overcome a chosen barrier.
Conclusion:

Summarise the four barrier categories and highlight the most common mitigation approaches identified. Collect exit tickets to check understanding, and assign homework: each student selects a destination and writes a short report outlining the main barriers it faces and suggested solutions.
