Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: benefits to employees of being a trade union member
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe at least three key benefits that trade union membership provides to employees.
  • Explain how collective bargaining can improve wages, working hours and conditions.
  • Analyse the impact of union support on job security and health & safety.
  • Evaluate the role of union‑provided training, legal advice and representation in employee development.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the benefit summary table
  • Worksheet with case‑study scenarios
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What would you gain if you joined a union?” Capture responses on sticky notes to activate prior knowledge. Explain that today’s success criteria are to identify the main benefits, link them to real‑world examples, and evaluate their importance for employees.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list possible union benefits; share a few responses.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (10’) – Present the eight benefits, using the printed handout.
  3. Group analysis (15’) – In pairs, students examine the summary table, match each benefit to a real‑world example, and record findings.
  4. Role‑play negotiation (15’) – Small groups simulate a collective bargaining session, practising how unions secure better pay and conditions.
  5. Plenary quiz (5’) – Quick Kahoot/hand‑raise questions to check understanding of key benefits.
Conclusion:

Recap the main benefits and ask students to share one benefit they found most impactful. Collect exit‑ticket responses summarising why unions matter for employee welfare. For homework, assign a short research task: find a recent news article illustrating a union achieving one of the discussed benefits.
