Lesson Plan
Grade: 9 Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Mandarin Chinese
Lesson Topic: People and places (e.g. continents, countries and nationalities, compass points)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and correctly pronounce the Chinese names and pinyin of the seven continents.
  • Match common countries with their Chinese nationalities and pinyin.
  • Use basic Chinese compass directions (north, south, east, west and combinations) in sentences.
  • Apply the vocabulary to introduce oneself and describe location in spoken and written Chinese.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • World map poster with Chinese continent labels
  • Handouts containing continent, country‑nationality, and compass tables
  • Flashcards of country names and nationalities
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Audio recordings of pronunciation (pinyin)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick world‑travel video clip to spark curiosity about where people live. Ask students to name any continents or countries they already know in Chinese. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to name all continents, state nationalities, and give directions using Chinese vocabulary.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students label a blank world map with the Chinese names of the continents.
  2. Teacher input (10') – Present the continent table, model pronunciation, and check understanding.
  3. Nationality matching activity (10') – Pair work using flashcards to match countries with Chinese nationalities.
  4. Compass direction practice (10') – Guided worksheet where students fill in directions for given cities; include a mini‑game of pointing on a compass rose.
  5. Communicative role‑play (7') – Students work in pairs to introduce themselves, stating continent, country, and city direction using the sentence frames.
  6. Quick check (3') – Exit ticket: write one continent, one nationality, and one direction in Chinese.
Conclusion:
Review the four key language groups covered today and have a few volunteers share their role‑play sentences. Collect exit tickets as a retrieval check and assign homework to create a short paragraph describing their hometown’s location using at least three direction words.
