Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors and businesses within those sectors
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four economic sectors and their primary activities.
  • Identify typical businesses operating in each sector.
  • Compare key characteristics and value‑added contributions of each sector.
  • Explain how the sectors depend on one another.
  • Apply knowledge by mapping a real‑world example across all four sectors.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of sector tables
  • Sticky notes or index cards
  • Laptop with presentation slides
  • Diagram of sector flow‑chart
Introduction:

Begin with the question, “Where does the chocolate bar you’re eating come from?” Students recall prior knowledge of raw materials and trace the journey to the finished product. Explain that today they will explore the four economic sectors that make this journey possible and set the success criteria: they will be able to name each sector, give examples of businesses, and describe how the sectors link together.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick revision checklist on the board – students write definitions and examples for each sector.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Slide presentation introducing the four sectors, key characteristics, and typical businesses; display the flow‑chart diagram.
  3. Group activity (15'): Distribute sector cards; groups list three businesses and one distinguishing characteristic for their assigned sector on sticky notes.
  4. Inter‑sector mapping (10'): Groups combine their cards to construct a classroom flow chart showing inputs and outputs from primary → secondary → tertiary → quaternary.
  5. Check for understanding (5'): Whole‑class Kahoot quiz / exit ticket asking students to match a real‑world example to the correct sector sequence.
Conclusion:

Summarise how each sector adds value and relies on the previous one, reinforcing the flow‑chart created earlier. Students complete an exit ticket summarising one example that illustrates the full sector chain. Assign homework: research a local business and classify its activities across the four sectors.
