Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: explore relationships between image and text, colour composition, problem-solving and communication
Learning Objective/s:
  • Analyse how image and text interact to convey meaning.
  • Apply colour theory to create mood‑appropriate compositions.
  • Use problem‑solving strategies to develop and refine graphic communication pieces.
  • Produce a coherent design that meets a brief and communicates effectively to a target audience.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed examples of posters, advertisements, and book covers
  • Sketchbooks and A3 drawing paper
  • Coloured pencils, markers, and a colour‑wheel handout
  • Computers with vector‑design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator)
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
Introduction:

Show a striking poster and ask students what catches their eye and why. Connect this to their prior experience with basic drawing and colour use. Explain that today they will identify image‑text relationships, develop a colour palette, and begin thumbnail sketches. Success will be measured by clear analysis, purposeful colour choices, and a set of workable thumbnails.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick analysis of a displayed poster – note how image and text support each other.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of image‑text relationships and key colour‑theory concepts with examples.
  3. Colour composition activity (15'): Colour‑wheel exercise and creation of a limited‑palette mood board.
  4. Layout & grid practice (15'): Grid drawing and arranging image and text to establish hierarchy.
  5. Problem‑solving brief (20'): Present a design brief, brainstorm ideas, and produce thumbnail sketches.
  6. Peer feedback & reflection (10'): Share thumbnails, give constructive comments, and note next steps for the final piece.
Conclusion:

Recap the four objectives, highlighting how today’s work addressed each one. For the exit ticket, students write one design decision they made and the rationale behind it. Homework: develop a refined poster draft based on today’s thumbnails, ready for peer critique in the next lesson.
