Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 18/01/2026
Subject: Kiswahili
Lesson Topic: show some awareness of what is implied but not directly stated, such as gist, purpose and intention
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the gist of spoken conversations and infer implied meaning.
  • Analyse speaker purpose, intention and underlying emotions from tone and context.
  • Summarise a listening passage in 3‑5 sentences using appropriate language structures.
  • Evaluate how unstated meanings influence the listener’s interpretation.
Materials Needed:
  • Audio recordings of short dialogues
  • Projector and speakers
  • Worksheet with cloze and summary tasks
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed list of key vocabulary and emotion words
Introduction:

Begin with a brief clip of a market conversation and ask students what they think is happening. Connect to prior lessons on identifying main ideas in texts. Explain that today they will learn to detect implied meaning, purpose and emotion, which will be the success criteria.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write down any words or phrases that stand out from a 30‑second audio excerpt.
  2. Guided listening (10'): Play the full dialogue twice; teacher models noting context, repeated words and tone.
  3. Group analysis (12'): In groups of 3‑4, students answer gist and purpose questions and annotate implied emotions.
  4. Summarising activity (8'): Each student writes a 3‑5 sentence summary using sentence starters.
  5. Peer review (5'): Pairs exchange summaries, give feedback using the provided phrase bank.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5'): Discuss how unstated meanings shaped interpretation.
Conclusion:

Recap the key strategies for uncovering implied meaning and check understanding through a quick exit ticket: students write one inference they made and the clue that led them there. Assign homework to listen to a short news clip and prepare a brief written summary focusing on purpose and emotion.
