Countries, nationalities and languages

🌍 The International World

Think of the world as a giant quilt made of many different patches. Each patch is a country, the people who live there have a nationality, and they often speak a unique language. In this lesson we’ll learn how to name countries, identify nationalities, and recognise languages.

Countries

Countries are the main building blocks of the world. They have borders, a government, and a flag. Here are some examples:

  • France 🇫🇷
  • Japan 🇯🇵
  • Brazil 🇧🇷
  • South Africa 🇿🇦
  • India 🇮🇳

Nationalities

A nationality tells you where someone comes from. It’s like the name on a school ID card.

  • French (from France)
  • Japanese (from Japan)
  • Brazilian (from Brazil)
  • South African (from South Africa)
  • Indian (from India)

Languages

Languages are the ways people communicate. Some countries have one official language, others have several.

Country Official Language(s)
France French
Japan Japanese
Brazil Portuguese
South Africa 11 official languages (e.g., Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans)
India Hindi, English, and 21 other scheduled languages
Exam Tip: When you see a country name, try to recall its nationality and one official language. Practice with flashcards: write the country on one side and the nationality + language on the other. This will help you answer questions quickly during the exam. 🚀
