Countries, nationalities and languages
🌍 The International World
Think of the world as a giant quilt made of many different patches. Each patch is a country, the people who live there have a nationality, and they often speak a unique language. In this lesson we’ll learn how to name countries, identify nationalities, and recognise languages.
Countries
Countries are the main building blocks of the world. They have borders, a government, and a flag. Here are some examples:
- France 🇫🇷
- Japan 🇯🇵
- Brazil 🇧🇷
- South Africa 🇿🇦
- India 🇮🇳
Nationalities
A nationality tells you where someone comes from. It’s like the name on a school ID card.
- French (from France)
- Japanese (from Japan)
- Brazilian (from Brazil)
- South African (from South Africa)
- Indian (from India)
Languages
Languages are the ways people communicate. Some countries have one official language, others have several.
| Country | Official Language(s) |
|---|---|
| France | French |
| Japan | Japanese |
| Brazil | Portuguese |
| South Africa | 11 official languages (e.g., Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans) |
| India | Hindi, English, and 21 other scheduled languages |
Exam Tip: When you see a country name, try to recall its nationality and one official language.
Practice with flashcards: write the country on one side and the nationality + language on the other.
This will help you answer questions quickly during the exam. 🚀
